Dover Castle

Dover Castle is an imposing medieval fortress, created by King Henry II during the 11th and 12th centuries.  Architect ‘Maurice the Engineer’ designed and built The Great Tower, between 1180 and 1185, the grandest of the keeps built by an English King between the 11th and 12th centuries.

Guarding the entrance of the Kingdom, it was a palace designed for royal ceremonies, accommodating Henry’s travelling court and welcoming distinguished visitors from abroad.

 The Great Tower

The interior of Henry’s Great Tower palace has now been painstakingly recreated by historians, designers, artists and craftspeople who have worked together to show it as it may have been when originally completed.

 OPERATION DYNAMO

See the very tunnels where the The Dunkirk evacuation was masterminded. Up to date effects, combined with real film footage, bring the dramatic events of May 1940 to life.

Deep within the white cliffs you can explore the World War II underground Hospital converted to look after injured troops in 1941.

In this new exhibition you can experience the history of the tunnels from the times of Napoleon to the Cold War.
